Good morning. I’m writing you today from Portugal on a yoga retreat hosted by my lovely wife’s company Atlas Yoga. This retreat has a strong focus on wine since we are located close to Porto (home of Port wine). However, it got me thinking about one day organizing a beer and yoga retreat… one day!

The Top 3 IPAs of 2024

In part 1 of the series, we covered the 3 best lager recipes so far in 2024 based on Brewgr’s analytics, and this week we are going to cover the top 3 IPA recipes in 2024.

Founders All Day IPA has become the “Bud Light” of the IPA scene in the US - you can get it anywhere, it’s affordable, and it’s an easy drinker that you can quite literally drink all day. It’s no surprise that people want to clone this beer - it’s refreshing, lower than most IPA’s in alcohol percentage, and great for a summer day. The hop that isn’t showing up correctly could be Amarillo or Cascade (or a mix of both).

SMASH beers are “single malt and single hop” beers, and they are popular for their simplicity. Mosaic is a lovely, aromatic and juicy hop that is great for an IPA. Paired with 2 Row malt, this is a dependable beer and a great way to dip your toes into the world of all grain brewing.

Another SMASH IPA with another standout, fruity hop, Citra. The name gives the citrus vibe, and the hope doesn’t disappoint - this hop mixed with 2 Row malt will make for a fruity, juicy IPA with a floral aroma. You just can’t beat the simplicity…

Are IPA’s Overhyped?

IPA’s have been at the top of the craft beer scene for many years, with West Coast style IPA’s giving way to New England Hazy IPA’s. I love a good IPA, but I do feel like some breweries overdo it - I love many styles of beer and getting too one dimensional is a mistake for a craft brewer.

Brewgr Recipe of the Week

To fit the theme of the week, clearly it was appropriate to call out a new IPA recipe. This Fisherman’s Blues IPA will knock your hop socks off - with 326 g of hops (11.5 oz), this beer will be bitter and will have an incredible aroma with all those dry hops. It’s a pricy beer to make because of all the hops, but it will be worth it.

This poll was a mixed bag - those who said they have entered into a competition generally said they were local or easy drop offs. We have some BJCP judges among our audience, I salute you for the dedication to the craft! Those who would not enter cited homebrew club bias, difficulty shipping their beer, and cost of entry as deterrents.

Having entered once, I would definitely enter again, but mostly just for the fun of it. While it would be fun to win an award, it’s cool to get professional feedback and to give credibility to a fun hobby.

And the Answer Is...

🍺 Super Bock, established in 1927, is the dominant brewery in Portugal, especially in the north where it is brewed. If you said Sagres, it’s a close second - especially if you’re in the south of Portugal, which is where it’s produced.
